Dear Bergen Catholic Community:
On behalf of the Trustees and Board of Directors of Bergen Catholic High School, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Brian Mahoney, Ed.D. as the 4th president of Bergen Catholic, effective July 1, 2018. He is currently the Head of School at EF Academy in Thornwood, N.Y.
Dr. Mahoney will replace Brother Brian M. Walsh C.F.C., who leaves us in July to assume the role of Co-Director of the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers Office of Education Services in New Rochelle, N.Y., focusing on Catholic identity in the 21st century for Edmund Rice Christian Brother schools in North America.
Dr. Mahoney has more than 20 years of experience in private education, both in the classroom and in numerous leadership roles. He has taught history, English and geography, and coached several sports including lacrosse and basketball. He received a Bachelor of Arts in History from Siena College and earned a Master’s Degree and Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Administration from Fordham University. He has served as a trustee and president of the Mahopac N.Y. Board of Education and for the past seven years as EF Academy’s Head of School.
As I outlined in my note to you in October, Dr. Mahoney was chosen following an intensive national search led by a committee consisting of members of our board, faculty, administration and alumni. My thanks to our board’s vice chairman, Brian McAuliffe A’ 70, for his leadership chairing our search, as well as the members of the search committee for their dedication and commitment to ensuring a successful outcome in selecting our next president.
As we entered into the search for our next president, we did so with the commitment that the president must understand, embrace and be committed to the mission of our school and the Essential Elements of an Edmund Rice education, have the appropriate academic and leadership experience as well as a firm grasp on the complex, rapidly evolving secondary education market we exist in. Dr. Mahoney has these credentials, values Catholic identity that is at the core of our mission as an institution, and has the necessary leadership skills to continue Bergen Catholic’s excellence for years to come.
Please join me as members of the Bergen Catholic community in giving Brian, his wife Amy (an Academy of the Holy Angels alumna) and their three children a very warm welcome to our family.
Bob Corley AP ‘05
Chairman, Board of Directors
