Joshua Powers Named 9th Cross-Country Coach in School History

JULY 28, 2021 – ORADELL, NJ – Bergen Catholic High School President Dr. Brian Mahoney is proud to introduce Mr. Joshua Powers as the 9th Cross-Country Head Coach in school history.  The recommendation came from Athletic Director, Mr. Brendan McGovern ’10 and Principal, Mr. Tim McElhinney.  The program has a winning tradition since its inception in 1958, earning its first league title in 1960.  Through the years, BC has won 2 state championships, 13 county championships and 21 league championships including the last three Big North Conference United Red championships in 2018-2019-2020.  He begins his duties immediately with the start of preparation for the 2021 season.

No stranger to the program, Coach Powers returns for his thirteenth year with the program.  He served as an Assistant Coach under the guidance of Coaches Al Naimo, Bill Brophy, and George Homsany from 2000-2007 and Coaches Bill Leonard, Francis Garcia, and Peter Tuohy from 2016-2021.  Those experiences have been of great value to Coach Powers whose passion for running and competition has translated well with his freshmen who have built foundations for recent program success.

With a vision to the future, Coach Powers is especially focused on introducing new runners to our program, ensuring that we continue to build a strong team from the freshman level on up.

In addition to coaching, Mr. Powers is entering his twenty-second year of teaching at Bergen Catholic where he serves as Chairman of the Religion Department and runs the school bookstore.  He is one of the most respected faculty members among students and faculty members alike not only due to his commitment to high standards and the pursuit of excellence academically, but the care he gives to each of his students and their families.
