Health Services

Bergen Catholic has a full time nurse on duty everyday, who is available to support the physical and emotional health of each student. Health services are under the direction of Dr. Douglas Avella. Bergen Catholic works with our partner Holy Name Medical Center, to provide free physicals by Dr. J.C.Mendler  and the physicians at HNH Fitness Center in Oradell, NJ. Please refer to the instructions below to book an appointment.

Health Office General Information:

  • The nurse is available everyday to see students for any illness, injury, medical concern and medication administration.
  • Any student who is not feeling well should report to the Nurse’s Office.
  • If a student is too ill to remain in school, the parent or guardian will be contacted by the nurse, and he will be dismissed from the Nurse’s Office. As a reminder, no student should call, text or email to a parent or guardian to be picked up from school. The nurse will always allow a student to call and speak with his parent or guardian from the Health Office.
  • If a student is ill, he should stay home. Any student must be fever free for 24 hours (without the use of fever reducing medication) in order to return to school. Please provide any doctor’s notes upon the student’s return to school.
  • A doctor’s note is required for an absence to be excused. Please refer to the BC Student Handbook for more information on the Attendance Policy.

Physical Exams:

  • Bergen Catholic High School requires an annual physical for ALL students, whether or not they participate in sports. Each physical is valid for 365 days, and must contain immunization records as mandated by the State of New Jersey.
  • No student will be admitted to school without a current physical and immunization record.
  • All physicals must be submitted on the NJ State Physical forms which can be found on the Physical Exams link.
  • If a student is in need of a physical at HNH Fitness Center, please identify yourself as a member of the Bergen Catholic community and call 201-833-3909. Please ensure that all forms are completed prior to the student’s appointment.

Medication:

  • If a student requires medication in school, please refer to the Medication Administration link. No medication can be administered without the written authorization and required signatures of the doctor and parent. If the student requires multiple medications, a separate form must be completed for each medication.
