Douglas Avella, MD, first came to Bergen Catholic in 1986 as an associate of Dr. Joseph Pizzurro, another Hall of Fame member. Doug is currently the team physician for Bergen Catholic athletics. As a graduate of St. Cecilia HS, he recalls competing against such BC greats as Stack, Rabadan, Lally and Barisich. He graduated from Medical school in 1979 and served his residency at St. Joseph Hospital and the Hospital for Joint Diseases. He was named the Peabody Fellow in Pediatric Orthopaedics at Harvard Medical School and was appointed to the teaching staff of the Massachusetts General Hospital in 1984. He has authored a book entitled, Raising a Healthy Athlete, and is a member of the Board of the Tomorrow’s Children Institute. Doug received the McGovern Award in 1994. He married his wife Elizabeth in 1982 and they have three children, Jillian, AHA ’04, Nicholas ’07 and Gregory ’15.
