Br. Fred Burns graduated from Bergen Catholic in 1962. He changed his name to “Br. Chris” when he joined the Congregation of Christian Brothers, and has been a member of that organization for the past 47 years. He graduated from Iona College with a bachelor’s degree in Modern Languages, and went on to pursue his master’s degree in Religious Education at Saint Michael’s College in Vermont. Throughout his teaching career, he has instructed students in Spanish, Theology, and Speech. He chaired various departments at Notre Dame—Bishop Gibbons HS in Schenectady, NY, Iona Preparatory High School in New Rochelle, NY, Cardinal Hayes HS in The Bronx and St. John Newmann HS in Naples FL. He is presently assigned to Tampa Catholic HS in Tampa, FL, where he is the Director of Campus Ministry. Br. Chris has worked since 19185 with the “Called and Gifted” program, imparting the charism and spirituality of Blessed Edmund Rice to lay faculty, staff and administrators for the Christian Brothers schools throughout North America. In addition, he has been a member of the Christian Brothers “ACTION” team that works with the student leaders, training them in implementing social action programs in their schools.
