Mr. John Fairclough (RIP) graduated from Bergen Catholic in 1964. The 6’4” forward was a two-year starter for the BC basketball team. After a solid junior season in which he was named to the All-Tri County Conference Second Team, he blossomed as a senior. John averaged 19.2 points-per-game during the 1963-1964 season, leading the Crusaders to a 16-6 record and earning First Team All-League. All-County (Bergen Record) and First-Team North Jersey All-Catholic (Advocate) honors. In Tri-County Conference games, he averaged a league-high 20.6 points-per-game. A model of consistency. he scored 21 or more points in one half of the team’s 22 games (including a career-high 31-point performance vs. St. Cecilia’s), and scored 19 points four other times. John attended South Carolina University, playing there under legendary coach Frank McGuire before transferring and finishing his college career at Biscayne College of Miami. He was drafted by the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks and also by the Miami Floridians of the now-defunct ABA. John settled into a teaching and coaching career in Miami, before his untimely death in 1975.
