Mr. Louis Greco, Jr. (RIP) graduated from Bergen Catholic in 1984. Louis was a three-year letterman on the varsity baseball team, as well as its captain in his senior year. As good a player as he was an even better person. He embodied all of the qualities that we hold so dear at Bergen Catholic. While he was a standout baseball player, he was talented in many other ways, as well as a responsible and dedicated young adult. His coach, Al Barton, describes him as a “Christian gentleman.” Louis went on to play junior college baseball at West Palm Beach J.C. and then enrolled at Division III national baseball power William Paterson University for his senior year. Louis died tragically in an auto accident in the Lincoln Tunnel while commuting to a photo modeling shoot in NYC, with the promise of a professional contract from the Chicago White Sox awaiting him. The entire Greco and Bergen Catholic family grieved together and Louis, Sr. made a decision to keep his son’s spirit and memory alive by creating the Louis M. Greco Baseball Award. The annual award has continued on for 17 years to the Bergen Catholic baseball player who embodies the characteristics that Louis, Jr. displayed—dedication and sportsmanship. Louis is survived by his loving parents, Louis, Sr. and Catherine and his two brothers, Thomas ’81 and Joseph ’88 who will keep Louis, Jr.’s memory alive in their hearts forever.
