Br. Anton Joseph Lips, CFC was a role model who is remembered best as someone who made a difference in his students’ lives, both in the classroom and outside school. He set an example for all to follow as a person, teacher moderator, and Christian Brother during his five-year term at Bergen Catholic. A graduate of Power Memorial High School, Iona College (where he received his BS and MBA Degrees), and Fordham University (MS), he taught at St. Cecilia Grammar School (New York, NY) and at Catholic Memorial (West Roxbury, MA) and Regina (Corner Brook, Newfoundland, Canada) High Schools before arriving at Bergen Catholic in the fall of 1963. Br. Lips spent five years at BC teaching four grade levels of math including (Algebra, Geometry, Calculus and Advanced Math) and Religion. He also served as the Moderator of the Mathematics Club and varsity football team (which won its first three State Championships during his tenure). His outstanding leadership skills were recognized when he was named as Superior of the Brothers’ community at All Hallows High School and at Iona College (where he spent the final 28 years of his career), and as Councillor of the-then Christian Brothers Eastern Province.
