Joseph Piela, a 1995 graduate of Bergen Catholic, is recognized as one of the finest all-around student-athletes in school history, achieving considerable success both on the field and in the classroom. A three-sport standout, he earned 10 varsity letters as a starter for the BC football, wrestling and baseball teams, eventually serving as captain for all three teams. Joe has the distinct honor of being the only BC athlete to be selected First Team All-County in three sports in a single year, and is believed to be one of only a half-dozen athletes in Bergen County history to accomplish that feat. He was a three-year starter for the football team, earning First Team All-State and Honorable Mention All-American honors at defensive back. He went on to continue his success at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a four-year letterman, three-year starter, team captain and unanimous First Team All-Ivy League selection. He returned to BC as an assistant football and wrestling coach and head baseball coach, helping to lead the frosh team to a county championship in 2004.
